Heroes School
RWANDA
Their Story
The idea of inclusive education is relatively new in the world. In the United States it was 1975 before the Education for All Handicapped Children Act was enacted, requiring that all public schools that accept federal funds must provide equal access to education for children with physical and/or mental disabilities. Prior to this, many, if not most, children with disabilities did not attend public schools. In much of the world, inclusive education does not exist or exists in very limited form and children with disabilities stay home, uneducated and often untended. This includes Rwanda, a small country in central Africa with beautiful rolling hills and one of only three countries with free-roaming wild mountain gorillas.
But inclusive education is being introduced in Rwanda through a very unique and special school - Heroes School. Heroes began as an effort among parents with children with disabilities and other people dedicated to the idea of inclusive education. Heroes is setting an example of what inclusive education looks like and what it can accomplish. It is helping to change the perception that people have towards children and all people with disabilities into one of compassion and understanding of all they can accomplish if given the opportunity.
