Environmental Design
Our environment plays a role in how we feel and act - it can have a calming effect or an energizing effect. Chaos can cause anxiety and depression in some and creativity in others. For children with sensory processing issues, their environment becomes a key factor in how they interact with the world. If the environment is suited to their needs, it can be a source of calm and well-being. If the environment is not suited to their needs, it can be a barrier to their sense of safety and their ability to concentrate and regulate their emotions; they can become over-alert, anxious, hyperactive or avoidant and non-responsive.
Children need to be in a "calm-alert" state for optimum happiness, learning, and behavior.
If your child is struggling with emotional outbursts, cannot concentrate or sit still, seems startled by small noises or changes in routine - it may be time to assess your home. An in-home assessment can help determine if your home is a place of calm or stress for your child. We can help you optimize your home to increase emotional regulation for your child and harmony for the entire family.
