About Pediatric Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy (OT) is the profession of helping people of any age accomplish any task that is important to them. Occupational therapists (OTs) work with all populations as well as organizations to help them function at their best. Our unique skill is to problem-solve situations that need improvement.

A pediatric occupational therapist works specifically with children aged birth to 21. And early intervention pediatric OTs work with children between the ages of birth to three.

Early intervention pediatric OTs can help children who are behind their peers due to developmental delays. We can help if your child is struggling to sit, roll, or participate in tummy time. Or maybe they need help to toilet, brush their teeth, or get dressed. We can help with picky eaters. Whatever is needed, we can help.

Pediatric OTs are essential to helping your child if they have sensory processing issues. This can greatly impact the way your child interacts and reacts to social situations and to their environment. A child with sensory processing issues may be acting out due to stress, not understanding social cues, or for other reasons. We can teach your child coping strategies to decrease unwanted behaviors and make play and school more enjoyable and productive.

For children aged 3+, we can help with skills essential for success at daycare and school - paying attention, following directions, social skills, writing. If necessary, we can suggest assistive technology and/or advocate with teachers or others to provide accommodations to give your child the best chance of success.
